Hair Loss Causes

Stress, disease, hormone imbalance, vitamin and mineral deficiencies all can cause hair loss. Different problems, including the most common, androgenetic alopecia, which means hair loss, also can influence hair loss. Male hormones mainly influence androgenetic alopecia, the genetic tendency of balding. Other factors like age and time are important to consider, but genetics play the most important role.

If a person who is losing hair has some relatives who are a balding, that is not necessarily the reason for his hair loss. However, since all men and women produce male hormones, called testosterone, dihydrotestosterone and androsteinedione, everyone can be a carrier, even if they are not experiencing hair loss themselves. These hormones, along with the enzyme alpha-reductase, control the majority of hair loss. As a change occurs in the androgenic hormones, whether high or low, hair loss may occur.

Another important factor to consider is age. People will not lose their hair at any specific age, but if the patient is a genetically predisposed and is exposed to a hormonal imbalance, they might experience hair loss. They might notice some changes like a large amount of hair on a comb, hair in their towel or even the bathroom drain having hair in it after taking a shower. If you notice this, you should visit your doctor, this will enable you to begin an early treatment, or even prevent further hair loss.

Treatments for hair loss include hair transplants, hair loss products such as Rogaine® and Propecia®, and laser hair restoration treatment.
